Tell the United Kingdom: Announce an end to fossil fuel finance

Your public comment will be delivered to Prime Minister Boris Johnson:

Dear Prime Minister Boris Johnson,

Climate science tells us that limiting global warming to 1.5ºC, or even well below 2ºC, requires a managed phase-out of oil and gas production. Yet the UK government is still using public money to prop up fossil fuels overseas. This undermines your credibility as the COP26 host.

With wildfires raging across California, and Sudan suffering unrelenting floodwaters - the highest in a century — that have displaced half a million people, ending fossil fuel finance is a matter of urgency.

By making this announcement at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) starting this week, the UK can encourage other countries and financial institutions to follow suit at the upcoming Finance in Common Summit in November.

At that Summit, 450 public development banks controlling over $2 trillion in public money will come together to pledge their commitment to the Paris Agreement, the Sustainable Development Goals, and safeguarding biodiversity. By showing leadership in ending fossil fuel finance, the UK can set the stage for a powerful joint commitment from leading governments and public finance institutions focused on ending fossil fuel finance.

This is the moment for the United Kingdom to announce an end to finance for fossil fuel projects overseas.

Equity requires that rich oil and gas producing countries like the United Kingdom move quickest to phase out oil and gas, whilst supporting workers, communities, and low-income countries that face a tougher transition away from fossil fuels.

This is not only needed to prevent this planet’s high fever from turning into a heatstroke, but also to ensure a better recovery from COVID-19 and its impacts on the economy. Fossil fuels were showing signs of permanent decline even before the COVID-19 crisis hit.

Please show true climate leadership by announcing an end to finance for fossil fuel projects overseas at UNGA this week.

Thank you.

Last month we learned that Boris Johnson is poised to announce an end to UK finance for fossil fuel projects overseas. This announcement is long overdue and cannot wait any longer.

In little more than one month, governments and 450 public finance institutions controlling $2 trillion in public money will come together at the first summit of global development banks, the Finance in Common Summit. To help build momentum, Boris Johnson needs to announce an end to fossil fuel finance sooner rather than later — and this week’s United Nations General Assembly is the perfect time.

As this week’s United Nations General Assembly, the UK must step up. Add your voice: tell the UK to announce an end to fossil fuel finance.
