Tell Japan: Stop Standing in the Way of International Climate Action

Your public comment will be delivered to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's Japanese delegates.

We recently learned that you and other Japanese negotiators are blocking efforts to develop strong climate commitments with the OECD Development Assistance Committee. This is absolutely unacceptable.

Humanity is under threat with the climate crisis. Millions of acres of forests are on fire across the globe from the Pacific Northwest to Spain and Indonesia. Intense storms have taken lives from Louisiana to Germany and Japan.

The Japanese government must stop blocking meaningful climate action to end public finance for fossil fuels. Before the G7 Summit in June, Japanese government officials repeatedly attempted to stymie an agreement on ending overseas coal finance and refused to agree to end domestic coal by 2030.

While governments were increasing climate commitments before Biden’s Climate Action Summit in April, the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry publicly pledged $10 billion to support new LNG projects in Asia. This strategy to expand the LNG market in Asia and lock in decades of new carbon emissions is unacceptable.

If COVID-19 has taught us anything, it is that we must prioritize our collective well-being and health in our global policies. Stop blocking efforts to increase climate ambition during the OECD DAC negotiations and demonstrate the global leadership we need on climate.

Thank you.

As governments around the world ramp up action to address the climate crisis, there’s one government that continues to stand in the way: Japan.

Japan is blocking efforts to negotiate a climate commitment at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

The little known OECD Development Assistance Committee helps set international standards and principles for financial aid for low-income countries. This aid should prioritize renewable energy and not dirty fossil fuel projects. But Japan is prioritizing the corporate interests of the fossil fuel industry over our climate and health.

Take action now and tell Japan to stop blocking climate action.
