Send Your Comment to Sen. Murkowski: Stop this Fossil Fuel Handout

Send Your Message

Your message will be delivered to U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski:

I write to express my strong opposition to the proposed “Strategic Energy for America Act of 2019.” It would be extremely damaging to efforts to confront the climate crisis, both in the United States and abroad.

In particular, Section 4 and its opposition to restrictions on fossil fuel finance at multilateral institutions would be a significant step backward in global climate progress. The science is clear that we cannot build any new fossil fuel infrastructure — there is already more oil, gas, and coal under development than the world can afford to burn.

Furthermore, Section 1455 and Section 16’s objectives to promote natural gas infrastructure and exports are deeply concerning. Constructing new gas infrastructure would lock developing countries into high-emitting energy sources for decades to come and make meeting the Paris Agreement’s goals nearly impossible. Gas is not a bridge fuel — it’s a climate disaster.

Despite all the progress we’ve made over the last few years in ending fossil fuel finance, Senate Republicans want to take us back to an “all-of-the-above” energy strategy that could lead straight to climate disaster. Senator Lisa Murkowski’s new proposed legislation, the “Strategic Energy for America Act of 2019,” would be a massive gift to the fossil fuel industry.

The bill would boost gas infrastructure, promote fossil fuels in international forums, and pave the way for a huge uptick in gas exports to ship pollution overseas, just at the moment we know we must stop the expansion of oil, gas, and coal production and begin implementing a just and managed phase-out of extraction in the U.S. and around the world.

Sen. Murkowski has opened a comment period for the bill, and if we flood it with messages opposing this dangerous fossil fuel handout, we can kill it once and for all.

Add your voice to make it clear that we won’t turn back the clock to a time of using public money to boost gas infrastructure and dangerous exports.
